A Midcentury Garden Oasis With Architectural Pedigree

Location: San Francisco, CA Price: $3,900,000

Originally designed by Midcentury modern architect George Rockrise, this San Francisco home was renovated by two renowned landscape architects. It is on the market for $3.9 million.

Joe Brown and Jacinta McCann, both landscape architects, were initially drawn to the design of their Telegraph Hill home. ‘Its Midcentury modern style, the sweeping views and garden, and the surrounding neighborhood sealed the deal,’ says Ms. McCann. They paid $1.5 million for the property in 2003
‘When we bought the house, we debated whether the kitchen should be upstairs or downstairs and settled on downstairs because of the indoor/outdoor flow to the terrace and garden,’ explains Ms. McCann. ‘We can barbecue and entertain casually which aligns with our social lives.’

The upper level features a South- and West-facing living space with city views and a wood-burning fireplace. ‘It’s a romantic space that guests simply love being in,’ says Ms. McCann, 61. They’ve hosted weddings, family events and the annual holiday party for the San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association.

‘Gardens are in our DNA,’ says Ms. McCann. ‘The gardens have specific microclimates which have determined the selections of plants.’ Near the front door, the garden has a sub-tropical character with a maturing palm tree
