Retired quarterback Joe Montana and his wife, Jennifer, have re-listed their custom-built Sonoma, Calif., estate for $28.9 million after previously listing it for $49 million in 2009 and $35 million in 2012.

The design for the home was inspired by the couple’s travels around Italy and France and includes many fixtures and furnishings imported from their trips. The home is co-listed with Tim Hayden and Avram Goldman of Compass.

Montana had a 16-year career as a quarterback, 14 of which were with the San Francisco 49ers, where he won four Super Bowls. For the last two seasons of his career he played for the Kansas City Chiefs. Montana was selected to eight Pro Bowls, was twice named most valuable player by the Associated Press and was awarded “Sportsman of the Year” and named the No. 1 clutch quarterback of all time by Sports Illustrated. The 49ers retired his number in 1997. Montana was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000.ADVERTISING

Dubbed “Villa Montana,” the estate consists of 500 acres with a main house, two guesthouses, an equestrian facility, a 30-stable barn, several ponds and a Tuscan olive grove that produces several dozen gallons of olive oil each year. “It was a long search in finding the right property,” Hayden said. “Their siting of the home is one of the most spectacular views of Mount St. Helena — yet it’s really a family home. It’s an elegant home with very intimate spaces.”
